Abstract
Background/Aims: In Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication, side effects of antibiotics may frequently lead to treatment failure. Probiotics have been demonstrated to be effective in H. pylori eradication. This study evaluated whether Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) reduces side effects of treatment and improves H. pylori eradication rate.
Methods: Prospectively, sixty-two patients, screening positive for H. pylori infection in endoscopy, were randomized to two groups. One was given 1-week triple therapy supplemented with L. acidophilus for 14 days starting from the first day of eradication (group A), and the other received the triple therapy only (group B). Side effects were assessed by a validated weekly symptom questionnaires during the week of treatment and the following 1 week.

Results: Endoscopic findings showed that duodenal ulcer was most common. The incidence and intensity of side effects were not different between the two groups by intention-to-treat (ITT) or per protocol (PP) analysis. There were no differences in H. pylori eradication rate between the two groups by ITT or PP analysis.

Conclusions: L. acidophilus supplementation neither reduced significantly the incidence and intensity of H. pylori therapy-related side effects nor improved H. pylori eradication rate. (The Korean Journal of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research 2006;6:138-144)
